South Country Education Foundation awards more than $30K in grants

The South Country Education Foundation has awarded 24 grants totaling more than $30,000 in its winter 2024 grant round. The grants range in size from $3,000 to $387.

Here are the five largest:

Cook Around the World
Camille Masem, Bellport High School - $3,000

The grant helped pay for airfare for 23 Bellport High School students to take part in a three-day culinary competition at Epcot Center at Walt Disney World, in Florida, from April 28-29.

Portable Choral Recording Studio
Kyle Sherlock, Bellport Middle School - $2,939

The grant will be used for the purchase of equipment for a portable recording studio to record music by choral groups at the middle school including the South Country Singers, the music department, and the middle school choir.

Wildlife Diversity Program - Sally Wellinger,
Center for Environmental Education and Discovery - $2,700

Ranger Eric Powers will teach a program on wildlife diversity to fifth graders at Frank P. Long Intermediate School. Powers will also teach a program on animal adaptation to third graders at Kreamer Street Elementary School.

Oaxaca Red Trunk Project
Jessica Weinberg, Brookhaven Elementary School - $2,600

The grant will pay for three trunks from the Oaxaca Red Trunk Project. The trunks contain items such as dolls and musical instruments used to teach students about the people, culture, and traditions of Mexico. The trunks will be used by eight third-grade classrooms.

Ice Cream Experiment
Natalie Baeza, Brookhaven Elementary School - $2,500

The grant will pay for first graders at Brookhaven Elementary School to visit the Long Island Science Center to learn about the science of making ice cream.

South Country Education Foundation will hold its annual fundraiser cocktail party and auction on Saturday, July 13 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the home of Chantal and Richard Berman. More information can be found at scefonline.org.
